01Company

One product,
for 19 years.

Marvelous Sweaters Limited has knitted sweaters and nothing else since November 2007. That narrowness is the point: a floor that only makes one kind of garment gets very good at the parts of it that are hard.

01.1Profile

The sampling and design department came first. It opened in January 2007, and the factory followed in November of the same year — an order of operations that still shapes how the business works. Sampling is not a service department here; it is where a programme is actually decided.

We are a 100% export-oriented sweater factory. Men’s, women’s and children’s sweaters, cardigans and pullovers, with intarsia design and cashmere-like fine gauge as the two things we are asked for most often. The work ships to Europe, Australia and North America, both directly and through domestic and overseas branded suppliers.

What sits behind that is a floor of 490 knitting machines — 420 of them hand-driven flat beds. Most factories of our size have moved further towards full automation. We have not, deliberately. Hand beds are what make eight-colour intarsia and short seasonal runs commercially sane, and they are why a buyer with an awkward colourwork programme tends to end up here.

Everything from winding to packing happens in the same building in Tongi. Nothing is quietly subcontracted to a floor you have not seen.

Heavy texture on 3GG is knitted on the bed, not assembled afterwards. One hundred sets of 3GG hand flats carry this end of the range.

01.3How the floor is organised

Six departments, one building.

  • 01

    Merchandising

Owns the enquiry from first costing to shipment. One merchandiser holds a programme end to end rather than passing it between desks.

  • 02

    Design & sampling

Running since January 2007 — six months before the factory. Charts, blocks, protos and size sets, knitted on the same gauge that will run the bulk.

  • 03

    Knitting

420 hand-driven flat beds and 70 auto jacquard machines across four gauges, plus rib knitting and winding.

  • 04

    Linking & making-up

180 dial linking machines at 14G, 8G and 6G, with overlock, interlock, buttonhole and snap operations alongside.

  • 05

    Wash & finishing

Washers, hydro extractors, tumbler dryers, brushing and 44 vacuum iron tables. Handle and shrinkage are set here.

  • 06

    Quality assurance

In-line and final inspection, colour assessment, metal detection. Reports to management, not to production.

01.4Where we are

Tongi, Gazipur — the sweater belt.

The corridor running north from Dhaka through Tongi and Gazipur is where most of Bangladesh’s sweater capacity sits. Yarn agents, trim suppliers, spare-parts workshops and machine technicians are all within a short drive, which is the practical reason a broken linker head does not become a shipping delay.
